My First 21 Days… Cause You’ve Got To Start Somewhere

One of those sideways days… today.

It was also my first day of 21 days.  No, I’m not going to post something for 21 days like I did for 31 days in October… I’m going to change something in 21 days.

And I might post about it occasionally.

“They” say if you do something for 21 days you establish a new habit.  I have a lot of bad ones to break and a lot of new ones to create.

And of course, the day you start something new, things happen.  Or they don’t happen.  Or you feel discombobulated over something silly that shouldn’t matter at all.

Maybe it’s the season.

Normally I love fall, but it’s different this year.  Everything feels in a hurry.  The leaves are falling too fast.  We picked the last of the apples Saturday and the tree looks sad.  And I feel like there’s something I’m supposed to be doing but don’t know what.

So, back to 21 days.

It’s easy to overwhelm yourself… or I should say it’s easy for me to overwhelm myself.  So I’m taking baby steps.

1-     Nothing to eat after 7 p.m.  No nibbling.  No sneaking.  So far, so good.  Of course, it’s only 10:05 p.m. (and 46 seconds) as I type this, but I’m sticking to it.

2-     No candy at any time.  HE was eating licorice awhile ago… I am strong.  No candy.  No.  Absolutely not.

3-     Fifteen minutes a day working on my book, with the hope I’ll get so caught up in it I’ll spend much more time.  And well, this did not happen today.  We were gone all day.  Excuses, excuses.  I know… but like I said earlier, I’ve been discombobulated.  That’s just the way it is.

And when I successfully finish this 21 days… and I will… I will start another 21 days and tackle something new.

I do think those apples are calling for me to bake a pie this week, however.  Pie with dinner is acceptable.

Just baby steps, remember?

  1. Good for you! Intentions don’t come to pass unless we make a start somewhere. I hope you achieve your goals. I have to say though, that sometimes we put stumbling blocks in our own way. Absolutes are difficult to cope with… i.e., NOTHING to eat and NO candy, instead of maybe a small, sensible, *allowed* reward if you meet scheduled goals. Might be worth thinking about.

And I’ll bet this blog post took you longer than 15 minutes to write. If your goal is to make daily writing a priority, maybe it should have come first??? The blog could have waited a day or two.

HeeHee! Listen to me! I’m the world’s best self-sabotager, (at least when it comes to dieting which I did very successfully once long ago, and not so successful several times since then). And I hate concrete goals because I invariably don’t reach them. I admire your determination to work at this 21 day challenge anyway. Best of luck!!!

    1. I’ll admit…. this 21 days isn’t a piece of cake… which is what I would like to eat right now 🙂 But I’ve actually done ok in the eating goals. I’ve written every day, but not on my blog and not on my Alaska story. Seem to have lost all focus for the blog and the book. Absolutes are difficult, you’re right. My brain is jumbled lately. Maybe it’s the diet change 🙂 Thanks for your encouragement, Carol.

      1. If it’s something you really want to do, you can do it! If you need someone to “report” to, you’re welcome to e-mail me with your daily progress. (Be sure to drink lots of water.)

  2. Love the 21 days idea. I think I need something similar for myself too. I agree time flew by the last few months. I barely remember November except the Thanksgiving week. Next weekend it’s already Dec. 1. We really need to make the most of everyday.
