31 Days of Aging Grace ~ Age Does Not Define You

Day One…

I love to read biographies… learn where a person came from and the experiences that shaped them.

The older I get the more intrigued I am with people who made achievements late in life… like Susan Boyle of “Britain’s Got Talent” fame.  She blew away the competition at 47 years of age.

And one of my favorites, Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the Little House series of books.  She didn’t publish her first book until she was 64, her last one published at 76.  Stories based on her own life… just think how long she carried them in her heart before they saw print and went out to the world.

Then there’s Norman Vaughn.  As a young man he travelled to the South Pole with Adm. Richard Byrd in 1928.  And my husband has a personal connection….

Doug worked the Alaska Pipeline.  In 1976 he met a man named Gil.  Thru Gil, Doug met his sons, Rod and Allen, both dog mushers.  Thru Rod, Doug met Norman Vaughn.

As Vaughn prepared for the Iditarod Sled Dog Race, Doug and Rod helped him.  They cut down and re-worked an old camp stove to fit his sled.  They made leather booties for his dogs.  And when Norman Vaughn hit the Iditarod trail that year, he was 81 years old.

I love stories like that!

Now, I truly have no desire to run the Iditarod… and while I’ve done my share of choir singing, Susan is way out of my league.  But I think I might have, possibly, maybe, a book in me.

I turned 63 this year.  And Laura has already shown me I’m not too old.  I better get busy.  Who knows what is yet to be…………
